Tile Contractor Mark Boller answers your questions
In addition to, “How long will it take” and “How much will it cost,” here are some questions I’m often asked about tile installation and care.
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile? — Most tiles are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired. They fall into two types—non-porcelain ceramics and porcelain tile. The non-porcelain type is usually finished with a durable glaze and often used for interior wall applications. Porcelain tile is dense and impervious and has a much lower water absorption rate than non-porcelain. Color and pattern can be carried through the entire thickness of the tile making it more durable and a good choice for high traffic areas, both interior and exterior, especially in freeze/thaw conditions.
What are the different types of stone, and where are they best used? — Granite is a hard, dense stone which doesn’t scratch easily, making it a good choice for kitchen and bath counter tops. Marble is available in a rich palette of colors and works well on interior floors, walls and counters. Slate, a compacted mud, is sturdy and exudes warmth. It can be used outdoors and indoors for floors, walls and countertops. Over time, slate will scratch and chip around the edges, giving it an aged look. The muted tones of limestone and travertine make these stones a popular choice for bathrooms, flooring and fireplaces. But keep in mind that both are very porous and can be susceptible to staining.
Why are there color and pattern variations from one stone to another? Shouldn’t they be identical? — Remember, stones are made by Nature, so no two will be exactly alike. But that’s the beauty of using a natural material; it brings character and individuality into your home. There are many manmade ceramic and porcelain tiles available that have little to no variation. Whatever your choice, always get a current sample. Ceramic colors can vary from one dye lot to another, just as natural stone can vary from one side of the quarry to the other.
Is it important to use a sealer? — There’s no need to use a sealer on glazed tile as it is already stain proof. We do recommend using a penetrating sealer on unglazed tile and natural stone as well as grout joints. This type of sealer is invisible and makes the tile stain resistant.
How do I clean ceramic tile or natural stone? —Regular wiping or damp mopping with warm water is all you need to keep your wall and floor tile looking like the day it was installed. If scouring is required for ceramic floor tiles, they can be cleaned with a nylon scrubbing pad and a non abrasive cleanser. Do not use steel wool or harsh chemicals as they will damage the surface of your stone and ceramic tiles.
Can you assist with design ideas and color selection? — Absolutely. I know that, for a lot of folks, walking into a tile store and seeing so many choices can be overwhelming. So I often work with homeowners, designers and contractors to come up with design solutions and make recommendations for their tile projects.
.So…how long will it take? — That, of course, depends on the scope of the project. However, we do our utmost to complete your project in a timely manner on budget and with minimal disruption to your life. Once all the design is complete, we will discuss time and cost.
